The first Australian dietary guidelines were launched in 1982, recommending a low fat diet for everyone. There was NO EVIDENCE to support this blanket approach or the mainstream approach to dieting, centred around two core principles: ‘fat is bad’ and ‘count your calories’.
Since the introduction of this advice the proportion of Australians who are obese has more than tripled and in 2017 more than 66% of Australians were overweight or obese.
The large number of people who have tried and failed to sustain weight loss through this approach shows it’s time to try something new.
